LONELY no more chapter 1

Sarah Jones world as she knew it has come to an end. Everyone she knew or loved was gone. Her mother, her father, sisters, brothers, just about everyone who made her who she was was gone. Except she thought for one person. The one person who got her through grade school, high school, college and eventually NASA." Anna's waiting for me. She thought." I've got to get to her somehow! She's probably scared and alone. I know I would be." What am I saying? I am! Sarah could feel herself getting warmer. Beads of sweat formed on her for head and she realized for the first time all day that she had yet to remove her space suit. At first, out of reflex she hesitated looking for a place to change. But then the realization hit her." There's no one here and there never will be again she thought out loud. So she proceeded to remove her suit. First her helmet which she threw out the window in frustration. The sound of broken glass echoing through the empty base. Then her silver top. It felt good to remove it even though the sun beat down on her bear arms. Her black tank top offering some protection she continued. Next the pants. She had to remove both the top and bottom layers because of their ability to retain heat. All that was left to do now was remove the boots. Sarah felt a little better outside of the uniform. As a child you love to walk around with no shoes so she was quite comfortable in her bare feet.

Sarah thought," now that that business is settled, I can get down to the business of finding Anna. And reassessing the rest of my life." Sarah headed downstairs and out of the building. She knew she had to find some mode of transportation." Apparently the Reds must have used a neutron bomb because except for the dead bodies the buildings are still intact." Sarah was right. They had used a neutron bomb. Not only were the building still intact, but all the cars were whole as well. Sarah couldn't help but laugh out loud." How ironic is this? I couldn't even afford a bug and now I have the pick of any car I want. She knew right where to go. Her boss drove a 2012 Lexis fully loaded and she knew right where the keys were. Sure enough, when she got in the car the keys were right where she thought they'd be. Hidden in the sun visor. She took one last look at NASA, paused to say a prayer. She started the car and set off to find Anna.

Sarah drove through the town silently. No radio, no sounds of traffic on the outside, no sirens, no children, just empty silence. Sarah rolled the window down. It was extremely warm and she suspected it was because of the leftover radiation. When she found an automated thermometer her suspicions were confirmed. The temperature read 110°. The problem was it was the middle of January. The ozone was almost completely gone." Gonna have to give me some sunscreen eventually". Sarah almost laughed. This would've been funny if it wasn't so tragic. Sarah looked at the GPS tracker," Los Angeles that's where the signals coming from. Hang on Sarah I'm coming. Because of The Long Drive  Sarah had time to think. To reminisce actually. She remembered the last night she spent on earth before the flight. Anna had come by to see her off and Sarah was glad for the company. They sat around a bottle of wine and drank and talked. After the wine was through, they both moved over to the couch. The two girls couldn't be closer if they tried. They had gone through everything together. School, boys, astronaut training and just about anything else you could think of. Sarah absolutely hated the idea of leaving. But Anna said," don't you dare miss this opportunity. Do you know how many women there are in space? And to do what you're about to do,  know one has done before. I love you too much and I am too proud of you to let you stay. Anna was feeling a little sleepy because of the wine. Sarah knew this and said," thanks honey that means a lot. Why don't you put your head on my lap and take a little nap you look tired. Anna tried to argue but Sarah insisted. Anna put her head on Sarah's lap. She could feel herself starting to doze off but before she fell asleep she looked into Sarah's eyes, rolled over on her back so that she was looking straight up. She reached up with both her arms and put them around Sarah's neck and pulled her to her. And she kissed Sarah  very gently on the cheek. Almost like a whisper more than a kiss. Then she whispered softly into Sarah's ear," do you have any idea how much I love you? I am going to miss you so much. When you get back, I am going to drag you back to this apartment, close and lock the door and shut out  the world for a week. And it's just going to be you and me and the bedroom. We will let nature take its course from there." Can't wait sweetie Sarah said and kissed her for head. That was the last time they were intimate together. Sarah's heart begins to ache.

Got to find Anna Sarah said. As she was driving, she decided to turn on the car radio." It's a long shot I know but you never know maybe somebody else survived. She turned on the radio and fiddled with the tuner. Static and more static. All the radio stations must be dead she thought. Just when she was about to give up, she heard a voice loud and strong. Sarah's heart quickened maybe she wasn't alone after all she turned up the volume." This is a test of the emergency broadcast system. All residents in the California area must seek immediate shelter. Disaster teams are standing by. Please evacuate to the nearest shelter. The message repeated over and over again." darn automated EBS system". Sarah's heart sank but then she thought of Anna and her resolve returned. After what seemed like days Sarah finally reached the LA city limits she checked the GPS to make sure she was still on track. According to this Sarah said she should be somewhere in Redondo Beach California. Gosh I hope this is right. She said a silent prayer and continued on. Just then she heard a loud pop and the car began to sway. She fought to regain control and stepped on the brakes. The car screeched to a halt and turned at an odd angle. Sarah had a white knuckle grip on the steering wheel. She took a few deep breaths and checked  herself  out to make sure nothing was broken. Once he was sure that she was whole again, she got out of the car to see what happened. Sure enough the left front tire had gone flat. But there was something strange about that tire. There was a puncture hole in it sure enough but she recognized  the size and shape of that whole. She had seen the same hole on the Army firing range. It was a bullet hole and from the looks of it,  it came from a high-powered rifle. Sarah's chest tightened, her breathing became very slow, a cold sweat ran through her body." What the heck is going on?"

Sarah was scared. More scared than she thought she could be. All this time she thought she was alone, the last living soul on earth. But then a cold reality hit her. She wasn't alone and not only was she not alone whoever was here wanted her dead!
