Would it be possible to have an "ignore" or "squelch" feature, preferably the type where one knows they are being ignored.
So often one has to put up with the equivalent of muzak coming from 2-3 people that fills up the board with senseless clatter. I know i don't have to read it.....but would like to see who is coming in, and at the same time would like say a few things in public to others.
it would also be a very handy way to not have to bother with some of the people who just love to snipe in private and have difficulty understanding the concept of "no".

This topic has been raised a number of times.
There was an ignore button, prior to the days of divorced mom and liverlad. This ignore button was abused and misused to the extent where people would ignore and unignore users which had the ultimate affect of rendering them frozen with no ability to speak. The only action they could take was to leave the room and return as another.
Even if someone was ignored just once, when they arrived in the room, their first action had to be to click ok to the person who was doing the ignoring, when there is a lag, this had the affect of them waiting for that to activate before they could even type.
It also had the effect of causing confusion. If someone had never interacted with another, never even spoke in public, never private messaged, some person in the room would take it into their head to ignore a user. The user would be confused ..........
In conclusion it gave all members power over others which was totally inappropriate as only moderators or admin should have the ability to remove chatters from the room.

What it does do is take away the power of some members to foist themselves on everybody else with nonsensical clatter, and it takes away the power of some members to abuse in private. Every has the right to do and say what they wish.....some of us, i believe many of us...would appreciate the right of not having to listen to it.

Every has the right to do and say what they wish.....some of us, i believe many of us...would appreciate the right of not having to listen to it. Personally I have never once in the chat room experienced abuse in private but if if I did I would just click the red cross or the minimise button and shut it, simple as that. I have shut down private message boxes where the talk has been inappropriate by minimising it. I don't think any of us "listen" to any chat, rather we read it ....... and to read it it has to be a conscious effort. Where I am doing other things and do not wish to participate in the public chat for whatever reason I just read what I want to read ie those coming into the room. Fairly simple really. No ignore button means we all have choice.... to read or not to read..... putting an ignore button into the functions gives everyone power over another However having said all of the above what everyone needs to realise is that it was a management decision both before and after the new owners took over and it was made because it was abused.... I remember a time where one so called male who had never previously had any dealings with me whatsoever decided to keep me out of the chat room because of what one female had said to him at another chat room...... which boiled down in the end to a pure misunderstanding prior to it being resolved. No one has the right to be judge and jury over another chatter with the exception of moderators/owners and those in authority. Brit

This is typical of your manner.
I'm discussing an ignore button, so i don't have to sift through your mind numbing clatter in the room.....and you're going on about being kept out of the room. I have no desire to keep anybody out....i'm asking for ignore not ban. Stick to the point....or don't bother at all.

whilst you don't others have successfully done it in the past .......... that is the point. If it were not possible to do it the ignore button would still be there Brit

If you were the owner of the site or some type of tech whizz.....fine.
You're conflating two different issues......again and continuously.
I am not and will not discuss banning, it is an ignore or squelch button that i am suggesting.....and not to you for that matter. Stop trying to divert the issue.

I do not know how to put it any clearer The Ignore button had the effect of banning people It is the very same issue. This is the last post I will send in regards to this issue. Brit

I WILL make it clearer for you.
I couldn't care less what used to happen, I really don't care about history. I doubt very much that in this technological world of ours that a problem that existed in the past is forever and ever to be a problem.
Get over it....the suggestion here is to have an ignore or squelch button.

We will not be introducing the ignore button feature in the near future. Britty demostrated to me, when I first took over this site, the effect of the feature within the current forum programming. It does effectively ban people from chat if abused, but that is a programming issue.
It is something to be looked at, and on the list but not a priority atm.

Its a shame, i have seen ignore or squelch buttons used and they were effective. As it is now, it is impossible to disregard mindless prattle and essentially the use of the public forum as a personal playground. Minimizing a pm does not let the person know that they are on "ignore", they have no reason to stop the harassment. C'est la vie and i will have to get used to it.

No offense Brit but how hard could it be to have an ignore function that does not notify the person they are ignored unless they send the person who put them on ignore? I don't see how that could do what it used to do in the room and it would save people much grief

Hi Rachel, Absolutely no offence taken I know absolutely nothing about the technicalities of this site and have no involvement in such matters so this question really needs to be addressed to FEMMEFIGHT Rachel. As stated in a previous posts I am no longer commenting on this topic as I have said all I can say, I just did not want to appear ignorant and ignore what you have addressed to me Brit
