Title: Text display
Post by: Corvus on December 29, 2017, 04:25:19 AM
I definitely see an issue with the display of quotation marks in postings. Quotes and apostrophe's are showing as question marks. This is something recent.  There must have been some changes made in the hosting server or something. It's annoying. Please fix.

I'm seeing this in Chrome and Firefox on a Mac.

The tech has been made aware of this issue, When it will be fixed is anyone's guess.

The biggest culprit is word processing software such as Word.

Good to know. It is frustrating if you write stories.

It's also happening on mobile browsers. I use Chrome on my phone and it changes out the apostrophes.

Without knowing anything about how this site works, I imagine it stores posts into a SQL database of some sort and there is some code in the receiving of data to combat SQL injection that is changing the apostrophes into question marks.

When your tech has time to look at it, he might check around there.

Of course if your code is super complicated finding the exact spot could be a nightmare.

As it is, it's something I can work around.

I suspect the server is NOT sending Unicode and is instead using some other text coding.

Hold on. May be it's fixed.

?Sweetie, let?s take this back to the bedroom.  All right??  To emphasize her intent, she reached down and slipped off her heels, leaving her even more of a compact sexy package.

Never mind.

it is something we won't be able to look at for a few weeks. The tech has some RL things (good ones, not bad ) which will likely make him unable to devote time before then.

Good to know. I can?t wait to post some stuff once it?s fixed.  :)

Just coming by to check and see if we?re back to normal in regard to ?text display?. We?ve got some new stuff but are waiting. No hurry at all. Thanks for providing this playground for us.

Edit: I see it?s not there yet.   :)

I've said before turn off smart quotes .... so I'll say it again, here is me using open office..

The following two lines has auto correct  (known as smart quote in word and apple apps) of start and end of single quotes or double quotes on..

it?s a mystery

?this is a test?

And the following with  auto correct for them off ....

It's a  mystery

"we have no idea"

As you can see if you turn off auto correct for single and double quotes it vrks fine.

Now how am I supposed to type without autocorrect? Lol

Will it fix just using quotations? One way to find out.
"Test"

Well...I guess it does work. Not sure if I feel like editing whole stories but we'll see, lol

Thanks.

You aren't turning off all the auto correct just the smart quotes option.

The bigger issue is all the current stories on the site it has affected and that bug is still a work in progress.

Thanks Meg. I live by autocorrect, lol. We do all of our writing on our phones, so it's helpful.

We just made some changes to the database and think we may have fixed the text problem. But it seems to still be a problem for apple devices so remember to turn off smart quotes
