Page 162:

She picked up on his hesitation. He wasn't alone in that car.  Gallant Joe.  He didn't want Meredith to be jealous of some girl riding in his car almost twenty-five years ago.   Was it Kaitlyn?  She had finally met the love of Joe's early life at his reunion three years ago, and Meredith had not been impressed.  But, if Meredith was honest, that was part of the reason she had encouraged Joe to go, because she suspected that even if Kaitlyn has aged well--she had not--it would still dispel whatever lingering memory Joe had of her as his perfect young love.  Meredith didn't worry about other women.  She worried about the fantasy of other women, the imagined perfection of someone out of reach, or merely new.  Meredith was everything to Joe, but she could never be new.
