Logan's Run: Jenny Agutter vs Farrah Fawcett
« on: August 03, 2023, 08:06:23 PM »
Out of nowhere I started thinking of this (sadly brief) tangle between Jenny Agutter's Jessica 6 and Farrah Fawcett's Holly 13

https://youtu.be/Xi8Ni2xRffo?t=257

I heard that it was actually meant to be a bit longer, but apparently the ladies got a bit....too intense while filming it, and the director feared they'd actually hurt each other, so it got cut down. Makes me think someone should write a story where we see a bit more of their throw down. 8)

Hammer48, exactly correct!  If you blinked, you missed it.  I saw Logan's Run when it first came out, and I didn't know there was a catfight in the movie until years later when I saw a photo of Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett in a breast to breast, hair pulling pose.  It wasn't in the movie at all.  You can find multiple copies of this picture if you do an internet search for Jenny Agutter vs Farrah Fawcett Logan's Run.

I remember seeing this photo well after the movie had been released and thinking, "Wow, I really missed a great catfight."  So I made it a point to watch for Logan's Run when it ran on TV.  I watched the entire movie in anticipation of this great fight, and couldn't believe that it lasted less than a nano second.  Talk about false advertising.

The same thing happened with Walk on the Wild Side.  A three hour long movie with a 5 second catfight near the end.  I just ran across it on Youtube, but of course can't find it right now.

That picture is what inspired me to check out the fight again.

Shame it got cut, but I guess Agutter and Fawcett were a bit too good. ;D

Are there any interviews where either of them talked about it?

So in the UK, when the film was released and because one of the fundamental tenants of the film is that God is a Computer, Mary Whitehouse attempted to launch legal case claiming Blasphemy.  Rather than contest this on the basis of wasting everyone's time and a lack of an actual successful prosecution in over 150+ years the film company folded fearing adverse publicity.  As a result in the UK some 18 minutes were cut from the film, supposedly including a very small pieced of nudity and the catfight.  This then got the film an acceptable certificate./

Oddly there has since been a TV Movie and I think a TV series that have never attracted anywhere near the same amount of kerfuffling, and a proper version of the film has never been edited and resubmitted for UK certification.  Mary Whitehouse also kicked off over the Danni Minogue catfight in Home and and Away an Australian soap that was shown at tea time in the UK

Just found this; https://www.allsci-fi.com/viewtopic.php?t=1180

If you scroll halfway down the page you'll find the explanation below. To say this is devastating is obviously an understatement. Imagine having two of Hollywood's hottest female stars of the time, they're both willing to tear into each other's hair, for authenticity, to the point where it looks like they could actually end up fighting for real. And someone yells "CUT!!"

Sounds to me like the two actresses weren't cowards but the director certainly was!! If actresses are willing to really fight to make your movie awesome then who of us wouldn't be okay with it? Yeah I know there are insurance considerations etc. but that's a risk that both ladies would have been well aware of before they started rolling around pulling each other's hair. They were willing to take that risk. Terence Young would have let them.

Surely it would have made so much more money for the movie if it was allowed to carry on. The only problem then may have been not enough camera angles to capture all the amazing action and sound recording equipment to capture all the cursing, yelling, panting and screaming. Now we'll never know who would have won a real catfight between Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett. The only hope is that someday it's remade but I can't for the life of me see that ever happening. It certainly won't be with those two anyway.  :'(

The catfight between Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett was planned to be a much longer scene. This had to be changed when the two actresses pulled hair too hard and Michael Anderson feared they would end up fighting for real.

Note from the other Old Man: Women: Can't live with 'em, can't let 'em fight in movies.

DKBfb1, that's fascinating.  Thanks for that link.  It makes you wonder how many other catfights might have happened in movies had the director or producer not objected.

No problem wasteland1952. The more I think about this the worse it gets., It is (to me) quite possibly the biggest disappointment in movie history. With all the ingredients for a legendary catfight It had so much potential yet tragically failed to deliver. 100% failed!

1. Director calls for ACTION.
2. Farrah Fawcett and Jenny Agutter give him action. They roll around tearing into each other's hair, taking turns at being on top and pinning/crushing/grinding their opponent beneath them. They do an incredible job taking the art of movie catfighting to a whole new level, raising the bar for future generations of aspiring actresses.
3. Director yells "CUT!!"
4. Jenny//Farrah stop and ask "What's wrong?"
5. Director "you're too convincing, it actually looks like you're fighting for real"
6. Jenny/Farrah "what?"
7. Director "it's too real"
8. Jenny/Farrah "it's called acting"
9. Director "but it's too good"
10 Jenny/Farrah "so how will we do it right?"
11. Director "it's okay we'll do without this scene"
12. Me/us (years later) "NOOOOOOOO!!!"  :'(

Which movies do you think two actresses may have come close to a real catfight?

My response:  NONE.

All that stuff about it getting real is nothing more than hype --- and fantasy.

Hell, I did that a month ago with "Babylon."

It was at least 10 seconds of a fight in a 3hr movie.

OK, so the fight from Walk On The Wild Side actually showed up in my Youtube "suggested for you" section today.  Here it is, near the end of a 3+ hour long movie.  Yes, that is a young Jane Fonda.
