Suggestion for the Site Owners
« on: May 13, 2025, 02:35:34 AM »

Once a story leaves the front page, it basically disappears into the ether, never to be seen again.

I know this will cause extra work but I do want to make a suggestion.

Please add a one page "Story Hall of Fame."  That is, the 20 stories from all the different categories that have received the most "likes" over the years.

I think doing a search for it can pull it up if you remember a title.  I have found stuff from 2009.

The main problem is if the original poster of the story quits FCF, then all his/her posts are gone and that would eliminate any stories that they did.

1. A whole page is not likely maybe a thread with links to stories. Why only links and a thread. Because it isn't fair to the writers of more niche categories. to move their stories out of that category to a place their readers may not go to. I saw a boxing story with 42likes and their title wasn't obviously a boxing story.
So boxing fans might not feel the need to look at every story in another section to see if one of them is a boxing story. So links make it more consistent.

2. My concern is we encourage the same idiocy we see in polls with someone getting their 20 id friend to like a story 20 times to get this recognition. And that in a week I get messages to update the list because someone suddenly has enough likes to qualify. Which brings me to;

3. This would be a LOT of work to create and maintain. We would have to go through every page and make a list of possible candidates and it feels like it would be a full day just to do that.  And like I say how soon before people pester us to update it..

4. I am not entirely sure stories vanish entirely from the front page. I have seen quite few views/likes comments on older stories (and had people complain about older stories being bumped in their mind.. by someone who isn't the writer? )

OK, Nutmeg.  I understand.  The workload to get it started would be substantial.  I always defer to you on something like this.  But I do want to clarify one thing from your No. 1 comment.

As I envisioned it, I wouldn't want any story moved from their original category, just simply duplicated in the "Hall of Fame."

Thanks for thinking it over.

I have a similar feeling to rin753.   There are GREAT stories in the past of this forum that have and will continue to get lost in the mist of time.  I would have thought a sticky note at the top of each section (catfighing, family fights, sexfights,no-hold barred, etc.) would allow a simple ongoing way to preserve at least the name of a deserving story, thus giving newer members the chance to find (using the search engine) some of the great older stories (for which they would otherwise be unaware).

But Nutmeg's concerns are very valid.  Some people will game the system and that defeats the purpose of the likes and views scoring for such a list.   You could create a panel of long-time forum members to nominate stories for the Hall of Fame, but that creates a lot more work as well.   I suspect it is already a lot of work for those involved in keeping this site up, and those people get very little gratitude and appreciation sent their way.   (Allow me to at least give a tiny bit of that gratitude to Nutmeg and all those others who have kept this site going for so long.)

So I reluctantly agree with Nutmeg that there may not be a good way of doing this.

Maybe people put something on their profile which links to their own personal list of favourites.

Not perfect, a bit of a sludge, but does prevent the stories from getting lost, saves work for the admins and would enable you to include works that didn't get hundreds of likes but was still a great story.

I appreciate the kind words. And choosing a committee as it were would be its own pain as you mentioned. Not to mention how quickly someone on it would find themselves in politics or under fire for "not choosing the right stories" Or not picking their friends stories or picking only their friends stories.. etc..

I did think of the sticky note for the more niche sections and might still do that. Those are the ones that I would worry would get lost in the shuffle otherwise. And they would be easier to do as a small project (going through 40 pages vs 400) Plus the sticky note would not push down some story posted in the last week in those sections whereas it might in catfighting :)

Mike has the right idea that if you have your own favorites, shout them out on your profile or a thread. One disadvantage the older stories have is many came before the likes system so the likes they have are either from long term fans who bothered or the people doing deep dives. They didn't get the "fresh new smell" phase of likes as it were. Or the writers aren't active here anymore so people forget they existed. I know people do shout out threads time to time .

I also really like the idea of a Hall of Fame, but I understand that it would be a lot of work to make one. Would it be possible to add a feature in the arrow at the top of each section that says “Last Post”, that would display stories in a given section by number of likes rather than by the most recently updated thread? I know that this isn’t exactly a hall of fame, but it seems like it might be a good comprise and might be a bit easier.

Definitely also want to thank the moderators for doing such a good job running this site!

We can't do a sort by likes (the likes is a mod added to the software so we can't do much with it)

I am going to do a list thread for each part of the stories forum excluding series and non English. Series since they are constantly bumped by nature so a thread pointing out older ones seems counter productive since that could change in a day. And no non English since I might end up with 10 stories in one language and none in another and seme like I am ignoring them

These threads will be in the forums themselves and pinned. .I will get to catfight last given the size of it compared to the others. A couple of points:

These will NOT be ranked. I see no reason to post number of likes since all that will do is create "oh 10 more likes and I am the number one story" syndrome. Plus I would rather everyone read all the stories listed versus being a snob and figuring only the top 3 would be worth your while.

I will also just do a cut off of likes based on the general feel of what the top stories seem to be. Meaning if the section seems to be a lot at 15 likes and two at 30 the two at 30 make the list. If I can get a top 5 or 10 great but I am not going to force it for the smaller forums. I may periodically update the lists but if I get someone bugging me the second they hit a certain number it will kill any thought of me doing that.

If you want to have discussions of what stories you feel should be on the list or have merit beyond their likes, please keep them in general discussion AKA this part of the forum.
