(this is all a work of fiction as i have often wondered how many female boxing matches took place in private gyms in the years when any form of female combat was not that well received, except for the woman wrestler and or roller derby queen.)
My father died last week. He had served in the army in World War II at a base in Calfiornia. I was going thru his army trunk, which I was never allowed to do before. It had the usual army knife or two, a empty pistol, his uniform which smelled too much of moth balls and his diary.
I started to read to myself what he had written when I felt my blood start to run.
His entry read, Yesterday, Saturday evening, about 50 guys attended a womens boxing match on the base. It was not sanctioned, but some guys had gotten two women from town to agree to fight. The fight was to take place in one of those metal qonset huts that were looked like someone had cut a huge pipe in two. The gym equipment was inside, with a boxing ring, that looked well used with ropes that were slack instead of being tight as in the pros. Several sets of well worn boxing gloves were tied up on the wall from 8 ounce to those mittens of 16 ounce.
One opponent was a tall blonde, nice legs and face.. Her appearnce would lead you to think she was a society girl the way she carried herself. Her opponent was the cousin of a guy on the base who was of Mexican descent. She was 5'4 to the blondes 5'7, and a bit stockier thank the blonde. Both women were talking with the men, while the men who were late started to arrive.
