Always been a big fan of Roller Derby and used to hang with the Detroit Derby Girls and have gone to some matches in rochester.  Would love to see a good video of a roller derby catfight.

I've always loved seeing roller derby.  The best part about it is the women and how they fight.  Unfortunately, the fights never last long enough!!

Grew up watching Roller Derby way back in the day. Kansas City Bomber with Raquel Welch was a goody!

Cheers!

Watching Roller Derby as a pre-pubescent Cub is what got me hooked on fvf.  So, I have nothing but fond memories of the heroines of the banked track.

Here's some old 1950's black and white action.

Fights start at 4:33 and 9:04.  They're short but intense.

I liked watching Roller Derby growing up but didn't truly get into it until I hooked up with Miss Canada and Crash Baby of Detroit Derby Girls first season.  Used to cover them for my radio show and interviewed Juliette Lewis and Drew Barrymore when they were in town filming Whip It.  The Detroit Girls had cameos in the film as well as some of the fans.

Crash Baby is the one in the front with the fist.  She stopped playing after broke her leg and moved into coaching and PR.  She was working behind the scenes in the film "American Virgin" (my film debut for a total 11 sec in this Rob Schneider film).

In Whip It, she is one of the girls that are standing in front of the arena talking about derby girl names.

I miss those girls.

It's interesting to see how this sport is more popular in the female version and I'm curious to know if the fights were really spontaneous of if they were staged in order to raise the audience's interest

It is a mixture of both.  There are some planned fights to promote some storylines but like anything, the occasional flare up happens and a spontaneous fight will erupt.

In watching the new roller derby, I get the impression that the young ladies simply like physical contact, so their "fights" are really wrestling matches with a few open handed punches thrown for good measure.  When the fights are broken up, the women just skate away as if nothing has happened, i.e. there was nothing personal about the altercation -- and that's not very feminine, where fights tend to be very personal.  Still, it's great entertainment and I can't wait for the next season to start.  Head for the Craneway Pavilion on the Richmond Marina.

Personally i prefer the old 50s 60s and 70s fights they seemed more realistic and personal what i find is very rare to find one on one match races where the object is to out skate your opponent  but also free to fight anything goes. Immortalized by KC in Kansas city bomber at the end. Thats when its about the fight.
