If I remember correctly, the vintage pics were taken of a real life hair pulling contest that was held in Palisades Park, NJ in 1940.  And I think the pic of the two girls on the ground, with the others standing around, showed the last two girls who just wouldn't give up their private fight.

I saw these pics quite a few years ago.  I don't think I ever saw a video of this contest.  Here's a link that tells about it.

Oh gosh...that Palisades Park contest was (is) one of my all time favorites!  Just a contest between a group of young-ish women who try to pull each other across a line by their hair...with an audience.  Sure wish I could have been there or that another similar contest could be arranged.

The Palisades Park contest is featured on an Universal Newsreel video I stumbled over few years ago. Maybe one day it will become public domain and some of that 30s/40s stuff already is but not this one last time I checked.

Vassago, you may have answered a question I've been asking myself ever since this thread was posted.  I thought somewhere in my distant memory, I had seen video footage of that Palisades Park contest, but I've not been able to find it anywhere.  I must have seen that old news reel you referred to.  I'm old, but not old enough to have seen it when it first appeared in the 40's.  But I could swear I've seen it, a long time ago.

You are right about the quality sucking but still enjoyed what I could make out.  I would love to have seen this live.  Some of those girls were very attractive...
