Nursing School catfights

with female students? I understand they

are all to be "professional" but that

I was a nurse for a few years and yes there were some fights! Sometimes it was over a doctor or a patient, sometimes we just wouldn't get along. It wasn't ever as sexy as you're probably imagining though, no short nurse dresses or anything like that! But yes it definitely happens from time to time, when you look incredibly long exhausting hours with the same people, there's bound to be some drama.

Due to the shortage of nurses, Many nursing schools recruit students from foreign countries offering subsidized housing, tuition assistance, immigration assistance and job placment upon graduation. In my area, Scotland and Nigeria are often mined for prospective students. These positions are often coveted...I wonder if those ladies are more prone to engage in matches or less engaged afraid to lose their subsidized assistance...

In my 20+ years as a hospital/ICU RN, the number of physical fights among nurses has been exactly zero. Fighting would result in certain job termination as all hospitals now have a zero tolerance policy. Even a fight outside of work on our own time will likely cost nurses their jobs. We are "at will" employees, which means we can be fired for conduct outside of work, including what we post on social media.

That's not to say tension and conflicts don't develop like any stress-filled workplace. I've written about some of these. Romances and marriages do occur among hospital workers, but I don't recall any serious rivalries. Nursing students are usually scared sheep on the floors, are usually underaged, and are certainly not going to compete for doctors. Dating patients within a year of your last professional contact is a serious breach of ethics and can result in a loss of license.

I've worked in places where we recruited international nurses. The concern wasn't them taking our jobs. It was whether they could adjust to difficult jobs in a new culture.

So why do I write about nurses fighting? As I've written in my profile, I see fighting as an underused art form and they're a powerful way to tell a broader story. Btw, the next chapter of Kiva's Fight Journal should be out in a few days.

This was explored at length years ago on Barb's website, but the discussion didn't involve fighting; it involved wrestling.  It was generally agreed that the nursing profession was very well-represented in the new and growing activity of women's recreational wrestling.  Barb's conclusion was that nurses are women who cannot be shy about making close physical contact with others, so it would follow that those who were competitive would gravitate toward wrestling more readily than women in other professions.  I recall Mary the Fit Nurse concurring with this theory pointing out that most of her opponents and trainees were women that she had met through the profession.

As Kiva points out above, any fighting on the job would result in immediate dismissal and career problems. So that fantasy is just that -- fantasy.  While in college I worked in a hospital for four years.  I would have to agree that a lot of the nurses that I worked around would have been excellent candidates for private wrestling activity.  And yes, I matched many of them in my own fantasy world. 

Fighting on the job?  No.   Elsewhere?  Well, maybe.
