The long war

The dry wind blew dust through the town of Alpine, TX.  It was 2024 and it was the third Saturday night.  Like every third Saturday night since 1949, two women were climbing into a cage in a big roadhouse just past the last stoplight in town.  They were both completely naked.  They both had been there before.  Almost the entire town was in the roadhouse.  In addition to the townsfolk, there were around 100 paying patrons from all around West Texas. One of the women was from the Lopez family, the other was from the Castro family.  In order to appreciate what was about to happen that evening, one needs to know a little about what happened on that first "third Saturday" in 1949.

The town had gotten desperate as the drought had wreaked havoc with the land.  Resources were drying up and folks were getting restless.  They decided to put on a show and entertain some folks around the region.

It helped that two of the townsfolk were in a bit of a disagreement:  Luisa Castro and Roberta Lopez.  So they climbed into the ring and beat the shit out of each other.  The townsfolk charged outsiders and made a considerable amount of money.  Castro ended up winning the fight, but got pretty badly hurt so that when Lopez challenged her to a rematch, she couldn't compete.  Instead, her sister Mariana fought Lopez and this time, Lopez won.  It was a brutal fight, and the town made money again, but Mariana wanted to fight again.  The second time Mariana Castro and Roberta Lopez fought, Lopez won handily.  Mariana had three daughters, and her eldest, Conchita, wanted to avenge her mother, and so she challenged Roberta Lopez and won.  The town began to make a ritual of it and began to make quite a bit of money.  Conchita was a vicious and strong woman and won her next four fights against Roberta, her eldest daughter twice, and her niece.  It was Roberta's youngest daughter who ultimately bested Conchita, nearly breaking her.  The two women fought 6 times, with Conchita winning twice, but losing the other four times.  Roberta's youngest fought for two years, winning against all of the Castro family, including all 5 of the OG Luisa's daughters.  Lupe was the youngest daughter's name and she was thought to be unbeatable, until Luisa's eldest granddaughter, at the age of 20, fought Lupe in a marathon brawl that famously lasted one hour and 17 minutes, with Valentina beating Lupe so badly at the end that she forced the long time champion into retirement.  Valentina was sadly killed before she could ever defend her title in a street fight in Midland a short time after her hard fought victory.

With the title vacant in 1953, Valentina's niece, her oldest sister's daughter, challenged the Lopez's to a fight.  And so it was that Teresita Castro and Sofia Lopez battled for the title.  For 8 years, the two families fought back and forth with an almost equal number of wins and losses for each.  Oddly, the families had almost no male children to speak of, but had over forty women in each family tree. In 1961 Martina Castro battled with Trina Lopez in what was later called the war of wars.  Castro emerged victorious and went on a run of nine straight victories until a loss in the spring of 1962.

For the next 30 years, the fights happened ever third saturday--they weren't always the "champions" as the number of women who were willing and able had become very large.  The two families had earned a lot of money for the town in what came to be known as "The long war". 

In 1992, the great-grandaughter of Luisa Castro, and her namesake, won in a surprise victory over Carla Lopez, the matriarch of the Lopez family.  The young Luisa was an animal and a powerful fighter.  She was considered unbeatable.  No one could best her.  She fought anytime she was challenged and from the age of 22 until the age of 36, she never lost.  In 2006 she was challenged by Diana Lopez.  Diana was a strong and confident, thick woman who had secretly been having an affair with Luisa Castro's husband.  The story went that as the two women were embroiled in a wild back-and-forth battle, Diana revealed the affair to Castro and "broke her heart".  Lopez went on to dominate the second half of the fight, breaking Luisa Castro's will and crushing her soul.  The rematch put Castro in the hospital and out of fighting for good.  Diana was not long for the title and the championship bounced around the families fairly evenly again until 2022 when Angie Castro destroyed the matriarch of the Lopez family at the time, Elina.  Elina challenged Angie in a rematch and won, but then the next three fights were all won by Angie.  It was late 2022 when Elina's younger sister, Cristina, challenged Angie.  The battle between the 24 year old Angie and the 21 year old Cristina was vicious and Cristina eeked out the victory.  Angie's older sister challenged Cristina and the younger woman absolutely destroyed her, ruining her for fighting forever.  Angie challenged Cristina to a rematch and lost soundly.  Cristina was ruthless, and nearly put Angie in the hospital.  A rematch, however, proved that the loss by Angie was a fluke and she destroyed Cristina.  The two women fought several more times over the course of 2023 and by 2024, they were even in wins and losses.

The two agreed to a "retirement match".  Whoever lost the next fight would retire from fighting for good. 

And so it was that as the dry wind blew dust down the streets of Alpine TX that third Saturday in May, 2024, that not a soul was out and about, because the roadhouse was packed to the gills for the final fight between Angie Castro and Cristina Lopez. 

The two women had both had children, were both "bulked up" and had grown their nails long and sharp.  The canvas of the cage bore the blood of their sisters and mothers and cousins and aunts, along with much of their own.  The rules of the fight were simple:  win at any and all costs.

The roadhouse was hot and the crowd was in a frenzy.  The two naked women had been fighting for 49 minutes, one of the longest fights in history, and both were in bad shape.  Drenched in sweat, gasping for air, bloody, swollen and bruised, they were grappling with each other's thick bodies trying to overpower their opponent.
