Of course it doesn't always to be physical, but sometimes verbal sparring can ignite a physical confrontation.  I remember a college PJ party where two girls started getting catty, playfully at first, and then more and more nasty.  The talk ebbed and flowed, with one then the other backing off a little bit.  They finally reached the point where just talking wouldn't satisfy their mood, and they went at it.  All of the rest of us (I asked afterwards  :) ) were in different stages of arousal flowing the argument, and then being witness to the catfight.  We pulled them apart after a minute or so, and the party broke up.  When  my roommate and I got back to our room, she gave me a challenging look which I returned, which led to a very rough play fight that boarded on a catfight.  And we weren't the only ones either  ;) .

Just discovering this but wow if this isn't something that I've been mulling over. A lot of times I find the psychology of a rivalry and it's escalation to verbal and then confrontation to be more exciting then an actual fight when done right. The way it twists and turns the emotions. The self doubt. The ego riding on high. The jealousy. Lust. Rage. God it's just the best.
