Personally, I might rate a story higher by the number of discussions it entailed as measured by the no. of posts revolving around that story.
As, Kiva's & Kelli's Fight Journals did.

If anyone, including me, could possibly do it. Hence, I mentioned the discussions the story entailed rather than simply counting the number of comments it received.
For example, Kelli's Fight Journal also have a general discussion section. Not to mention, someone mentioning it in a distantly related topic on writing styles. So, to be more specific, how influential the story was/is.
I wouldn't expect someone to manually go through the site's sections to check it. It's best done by a bot. But again, it's still laborious for the moderators. So, better to wait to see what idea they come up with.
