 The biggest highlight or lowlight depending on your point of view is Stella Stevens giving Ursula Andress a good shellacking to knock her out of first place. Kim Novak had a convincing win over Anita Ekberg to stay unbeaten and take over first place after trailing Ursula for most of the tournament. Anita was making a comeback and might have beaten Kim if she could have held out a little longer.

There are two rounds remaining. Statistically the only ones who can win are Kim Novak (29-0-0 and dff =433); Ursula Andress (28-1-0 and diff=450) and Anita Ekberg (27-1-1 and diff =252).
Kim Novak faces Sophia Loren and then Ursula Andress. Ursula Andress faces Anita Ekberg and then Kim Novak. Anita Ekberg faces Ursula Andress and then Rhonda Fleming. Here are some of the scenarios that could determine the winner.

• Kim can determine her own fate by beating both Sophia and Ursula. If Kim loses both fights than either Ursula or Anita will win.
• If Ursula wins both her fights than she will be the champion if Kim loses to Sophia. Or if Kim beats Sophia but Ursula ends up with a greater point differential. • With draws being possible there are probably other outcomes that could determine the winner. I leave that as an exercise for the reader.

Highlights:  
Kim Novak remained in first place by beating Sophia Loren fairly easily. Ursula Andress remained hot on her sexy tail by beating Anita Ekberg fairly easily. I would have thought that these two fights would have been a lot closer and right down to the wire with any of the four women having a good chance at winning. Kim Novak and Ursula Andress will fight it out for the championship next round. Another win could put the sleeper Stella Stevens in 3rd place if  she beats Jane Fonda and Anita Ekberg  loses to Rhonda Fleming.

There were lots of very close fights with set 1 having four of its eight fights with only one vote difference: Martha Hyer vs Joi Lansing; Mitzi Gaynor vs Barbara Eden;  Jane Russell vs Bettie Page; and Yvonne Craig vs Esther Williams all at 44:43 and another with 2 votes different: Tina Louise vs Gina Lollobrigida at 45-43. Of course set 1 also had the biggest beat down  with Diana Dors demolishing  Lisa Gaye by 73.49% at 61-22

Shifts in position are as follows:
Jane Fonda’s loss to Claudia Cardinale knocked her out of the top 16 and dropped her below Angie Dickinson, Martha Hyer, and Mitzi Gaynor. Angie Dickinson is not in the top 16. Highlights: 
Kim Novak was the winner by defeating Ursula Andress convincingly. Incredibly she did not lose a fight although she did have some narrow escapes. Her closest fights were against Gina Lollobrigida by 51 to 49. Gina is a long term nemesis and it is not surprising this was a tough fight. She just beat Jayne Mansfield only by 52 to 49. Jayne proved to be tougher than many had thought and this fight was an early indication. Perhaps most surprising was Kim beat Jane Fonda by only 60 to 58. Jane finished in 20th place. Perhaps Kim was saving herself as her next fight was with Bettie Page and there was no way Kim wanted to lose to Bettie. She had some other close fights and you can look them up. Most remarkable she seemed to get stronger near the end of the tournament. I shall be sure to why when I interview her and her rivals. Her last five fights were all against women who finished 6th or higher. She won those fights with an average of 16.6 votes. The closest being against Anita Ekberg and the biggest against Stella Stevens.

Since this was the last set of fights of the tournament it looks like some women went all out knowing they didn’t have to save anything for another fight. In particular Anita Ekberg battered Rhonda Fleming for the worst beat down of the entire tournament with 92-21 = 71 [81.42%] to replace Ursula Andress’ beating of Ava Gardner with 40-10 = 30 [80.00%]. Poor Ursula, she not only finished in 2nd place for the tournament but got aced out in the last round for the worst beat down. Maybe to prove all the nay sayers wrong, Stella Stevens beat Jane Fonda for the 4th worst beat down by percentage 88-27 = 61 [76.52%]. This is of note because Jane gave Kim one of her toughest fights. If you look at the worst beat downs by difference in votes than this round produced the top three beat downs: Anita Ekberg beats Rhonda Fleming: 92-21 = 71 [81.42%]; Stella Stevens beats Jane Fonda: 88-27 = 61 [76.52%]; and Diana Dors beats Joan Collins: 80-31 = 49 [72.07%]. This round had a lot of votes cast.

The Kim Novak vs Ursula Andress fight was a bit disappointing for being a title fight. It was sort of like the US Super Bowl in which the hype often exceeds the excitement of the actual game played. The best fight was Sophia Loren vs Claudia Cardinale if you like hard fought, intense, nasty catfights that do right down to the wire. The fight was close all
the way with generally it looking like Sophia was winning for most of the fight. But the teenager Claudia seemed to have a little more reserve. She got Sophia down and then held on to win in spite of Sophia making a comeback. The victory was the closest of the round and was only 2 votes.

Stella Stevens wanted me to point to barbosa and Mindcastle out that she finished ahead of Sophia Loren and Claudia Cardinale. And Jayne Mansfield wanted me to point out to barbosa that she finished in a won/loss/draw tie with Claudia Cardinale and Mamie Van Doren. Both women say they would not have finished as high as they did if it wasn’t for them trying to prove barbosa wrong.

Also of note, the two generally accepted biggest bitches as far as mouthing off goes finished at the bottom with Joan Collins finishing ahead of bottom dweller Elizabeth Taylor.


Shifts in position are as follows:
It wasn’t a change of position but Claudia Cardinale, Jayne Mansfield, and Mamie Van Doren stayed in 6th, 7th, and 8th position with the same won/loss/draw record and only the difference in votes determining the order. Perhaps we should have them all fight each other in another head to head competition. Joi Lansing’s remarkable or lucky when over Mitzi Gaynor moved her from 13th to 12th place as Honor Blackman dropped to 14th place behind Gina Lollobrigida after being smashed by Martha Hyer. Gina move to 13th place by beating Ava Gardner. Martha’s convincing win over Honor moved her from 17th to 15th. This pushed Rhonda Fleming and Angie Dickinson down to 16th and 17th as Rhonda was sent to the hospital by Anita Ekberg and Angie Dickinson was left a bloody mess by Jayne Mansfield. Angie finished out of the top half of the rankings. Martha and Rhonda ended up with identical won/lose/draw records and perhaps a fight is due between them. Diana Dors pounding of Joan Collins and Jane Fonda’s dismantling by Stella Stevens had them switch positions for 19th and 20th. They finished only due to total difference in votes so perhaps a fight between Diana and Jane is also called for. Barbara Eden’s beating of Brigitte Bardot mover her ahead of Brigitte and Jane Russell who lost badly to Tina Louise. She went form 23rd to 21st. Brigitte and Jane also dropped below Yvonne Craig who destroyed Elizabeth Taylor.  There have been comments that Barbara Eden has been a great overachiever but the experts were split on her fight with Brigitte so that can’t be considered and upset. Diana Rigg and Ava Gardner exchanged positions at 26th and 27th with Diana beating clobbering Lisa Gaye and Ava being ass kicked by Gina Lollobrigida. Lisa dropped from 2ith to 29th with her loss as Rita Hayworth moved ahead of her by beating Bettie Page. The experts had favored Bettie by 5:2 so that was a bit of an upset.

Claudia Cardinale won the honor of winning the most rounds by the biggest beat down. She had a remarkable run from round 7 though round 15 winning 7 of these 9 rounds and having a run of 5 in a row. I'm not sure what happened after that but had she kept it up she would have won the tournament with ease. Perhaps she expended too much energy in going for those big wins.

Elisabeth Taylor not only finished in last place but also got the worst beatdowns in the most number of rounds.

How did I miss that. You could be right. It was in the 2nd round. Actually Barbara won her first 7 fights. I guess she had her magic spell working then. She lost to Rita Hayworth of all people and it must be when her magic spell began to tarnish or lose some of its potency. You can only cross your arms and nod your head so many times, especially when someone is yanking your head around by your hair.

Also I can't disagree that Sophia Loren vs Anita Ekberg would have been a good final.

Yes, I am guilty as charged. I can't even claim it was an accident or I forgot her. I did consider her but I had to chose between her and Senta Berger and I went with Senta. OK, so I could have dropped someone else but that was my thinking at the time. Part of my original problem was that I didn't have enough good photos of Sylva at the time. That is an excuse but not a sufficient one. There are others I probably should have included but those I didn't recall until after the tournament started.

Perhaps I can do a poll of Sylva against someone. Who should it be?

Quite often during the experts' picks for fights a fighter has been mentioned as being overrated, or overachieving or underachieving. I certainly have my opinions also on this topic. However, the results from the original ranking by 61 voters compared to the final standings is interesting and doesn't always support the conclusions of the experts. So according to the original ranking the four biggest overachievers are: Gina Lollobrigida, Jayne Mansfield, Mamie Van Doren, and Martha Hyer.
The four biggest underachievers are:Jane Russell, Jane Fonda, Brigitte Bardot, and Barbara Eden.

Guess if you are named Jane it is better to spell your name with an y in it as in Jayne. Jane Russell was often mentioned as underachieving but surprisingly Jane Fonda was also picked much higher originally. Barbara Eden was often cited as being an overachiever in agreement with the original thoughts. Jayne Mansfield was a big overachiever. It is hard to correlate this with the experts opinions during the contests as she was often picked to win but some like barbosa almost always picked her to lose. Jayne suggested to me that is because he wanted to get into her pants and was using some reverse psychology. I had the general impression that although no one really mentioned Gina as being an overachiever the general consensus was that she should have done better than she did. In other words I think several felt she underachieved. The biggest enigma to me was Stella Stevens. Perhaps she had the most opinions about her being a big overachiever and yet she finished only three positions higher than her original rankings.

The top five finishers ended up close to the original predictions. A bit of a surprise to me is that Claudia Cardinale was an overachiever by 5 places. Again, opinions expressed during the rounds would have suggested the opposite, that she was underachieving.

Perhaps some of the discrepancies between what was voiced during the contests compared to the initial/final changes is that many of the original voters voted throughout the fights. Thus, although in disagreement with the pundits who voiced their opinions, they voted more consistently with how they voted originally. Who knows why some people think some sex symbols can fight and some can't.
