Honestly, I doubt it. For that to happen, they would have to print up each VHS individually and encode it. And then keep records of what each encoding is. I think it was more a scare tactic. Though I could be wrong.
A good example (I wont list any site names) is a few years, my internet (I was using AOL. And it sucked) screwed up when I clicked a link and it came up saying that I was trying to download a copyrighted image or something and that my activity would be reported to my ISP and I would be prosecuted. I immediately emailed the site and explained what happened and the guy told me 'don't worry, its just a scare tactic' or something. Back when VHS came out, a majority of people were naive/ignorant of limitations. THerefore, you could tell people 'we can trace this' and they would most likely believe it because you couldn't google search things. Now though, it could be possible with downloads with the right knowledge. However, how many female wrestling companies do you know that would possess that know how.
If you REALLY want to know, just google search 'Is it possible to encode and trace a VHS tape?' However, how would they know someone found it and sold it? VHS players don't relay things. And VHS isnt very big, so no one would sell it online to draw attention to it. And after so many years, explaining you threw it out would be believable.
