Girl Chat: Let’s Sting shall we?

Well, I hope everyone’s in a catty mood, because this topic is arguably peak catty. Yes, it’s finally time to discuss the art of the sting.

A good sting should be cold, sharp, and discreet. The aim of a sting is not to provoke a catfight then and there; its purpose is to ratchet up the tension between you and your rival.

A good sting should make you smile and make your rival frown — and bonus points if you have an audience.

The cliché example would probably be something like this:

“I love your dress, Amy. It’s Gucci, isn’t it? I recognise it from their Milan 2023 collection.”

A more provocative sting would be boldly walking over to where Amy and her partner are talking and casually hooking your arm around his — or her — unguarded left arm. Of course, you’ll release them… eventually — but you’ll cling on just long enough to make a subtle point to Amy.

So then, stings… tell me about the best ones you’ve inflicted? Or maybe you were on the receiving end? Or perhaps you were in the right place at the right time to witness a performance?

Xoxo,
Kate

I think a backhanded compliment is more effective than a putdown.

> Good to see you changed hairdressers.  Finally.

> That hair-color is an improvement on you.  Keep it up.

> Wow, Statistics 410?  Didn't realize you so scholarly.

> The boys at the frat were asking about your whereabouts Saturday night.  Especially the dumpy one's.

Personally I prefer a more direct approach and out of the two examples I posted. I’ve hooked myself onto an unguarded arm once before and honestly it felt good. While I was openly invading her territory, I kept her distracted from my actions with a polite conversation about work. I could see her getting more agitated with every passing second and eventually I released her boyfriend.

Skin on skin contact, like in the arm hook situation you describe, is a good pre-fight "test" of a rival.  If she reflexively pulls back, she fears a confrontation with you.

(And if her man "leans into" the arm hook, he's physically attracted to you.)

Ditto a work wife-IRL wife handshake.  Whoever holds the handshake the longest is winning the confrontation.
