Well, I hope everyone’s in a catty mood, because this topic is arguably peak catty. Yes, it’s finally time to discuss the art of the sting.
A good sting should be cold, sharp, and discreet. The aim of a sting is not to provoke a catfight then and there; its purpose is to ratchet up the tension between you and your rival.
A good sting should make you smile and make your rival frown — and bonus points if you have an audience.
The cliché example would probably be something like this:
“I love your dress, Amy. It’s Gucci, isn’t it? I recognise it from their Milan 2023 collection.”
A more provocative sting would be boldly walking over to where Amy and her partner are talking and casually hooking your arm around his — or her — unguarded left arm. Of course, you’ll release them… eventually — but you’ll cling on just long enough to make a subtle point to Amy.
So then, stings… tell me about the best ones you’ve inflicted? Or maybe you were on the receiving end? Or perhaps you were in the right place at the right time to witness a performance?
Xoxo,
Kate
