So tired of 3D
« on: March 22, 2013, 04:22:57 PM »
ok it's not that I hate 3D but did anyone else notice how nowadays you don't see catfight artists who can actually draw, in hand or on their computer? everything now is 3D and most of it really doesn't look very good. mostly it looks like poor character design from some bad videogame out of the 90s. are there any non 3D artists left on this site?

As a professional in traditional and digital arts, here's my two cents.

The vast majority of the catfight art I have posted over the years has been digital for one major reason: time. All the catfight art I do is for free and on what little free time I have from my "day job". I just don't have the time to pencil, ink, color, scan, edit this kind of stuff. In Poser I have a number of preset figures, costumes, props, scenes and lighting set-ups. A few quick clicks, a little tweaking here and there and I send it to render. I can go back to work while that's running in the background. Make a couple post-render tweaks and I have a fully finished rendering. All in all it is *much* less labor.

There are several VERY good digital artists that post here and other places. Sadly they are outnumbered by not so good. The 3D programs are deceptively simple. Easy to learn, but takes a little doing to master. But then again, so is drawing. To be honest, I've seen just as much lower-than-average drawings as I have seen renders. It really comes down to the skills of the artist.

If people want high-quality artwork, then more support needs to be made either financially, or something else. Other than that, you'll just have to sort through all the crap to find the real gems and enjoy the treasure you just found.

I agree with you : 3D sounded like a good idea, but so-so 3D artworks are a lot worse than so-so 2D drawings.

Maybe I'm not the the 21st century Leonardo, but I do bring my humble contribution at www.fireclaws.net/index_board.htm to the catfight community, and I do it the old fashion way : first with (2D !) paper and pencil, then coloring and shading with computer. Sometimes, I even feel that I'm improving !

I definitely understand the attraction to real "art".  I would say some of the 3D stuff, the really good stuff, reaches the level of art.  At the same time, you have to have skill to do real art.  Not that 3D doesn't take skill, but I think for people like myself with no artistic skill it gives a huge hand up.  I think I do a good job at story telling.  If I were to draw it, you would laugh me out of the room.  But if I did it 3D, I could probably do a credible job and at least make it entertaining.  I am sure for many real artists it is no faster to do it 3D and they probably do a better job free hand, but for those of us who are left, 3D software would be the only option.
I love catfights and chatting.  Look me up on trillian at ljack66   (I think... just figuring Trillian out)

Below is a link to (and preview frame of) what I consider to be some of my better recent work. I'm in the same boat as some others here as far as choice of tool/approach, in that I can't draw by hand to save my life, but can manipulate 3D computer software skillfully enough to produce results that I consider to be acceptable.

The 3D software angle also has the advantage of allowing one to move from one action frame to the next more easily and quickly, in that you just have to reposition the characters and already have the background setting present, instead of having to start from scratch and recreate everything for each new shot.

I've been working with 3D graphics for about 5 years now and can speak from experience that a good representation without looking cartoonish is not easily achieved. Practice and dedication makes perfect they say, and I always strive to keep improving my work both through dedication and with advances in technology. Check out my work if you wish. www.pro3Dapartmentwrestling.com  . Cheers!
