Interesting timing about this post. Last night on MeTV, the old show Emergency aired, and it was the episode showing the mass field hockey girl fight.
The call came in to Squad 51 about an "injury at the college." As soon as I heard that, I had a feeling it was the field hockey fight, and sure enough it was. But the actual fighting was not as good as I thought I remembered.
When the squad got to the field, there were several fights happening in the background, but the camera didn't focus on any particular fight long enough to really see anything. And then the one with the most promise happened while Gage worked on a girl with an injured ankle. Two girls, both with short blond hair, slashed at each other with their sticks. Then one of the girls knocked the other down with a good punch, the sticks dropped, and the girls started fighting on the ground. Unfortunately, a sheriff's deputy was right there, and got between them within seconds. The girls were grasping at each other, trying to hit one another, but the deputy kept them from really getting into it.
I guess my memory "remembered" the fight as being much better than it actually was. I guess that's not surprising, since that show aired circa 1972, only 42 years ago!
