In my opinion, Roller Jam was the best attempt at recreating the old Roller Derby. But it only lasted a couple of years and then folded. Like the original Roller Derby, the women in Roller Jam did a good job selling their fights.
Check out this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ns-s6zvC7EI too liked the original Derby that was on TV every weekend, and back in the 1950's it was in black and white. Youtube has a lot of the old stuff with good fights featuring the likes of Gerry Murray, Midge "Toughie" Brashun, Ann Calvello, Annis "Big Red" Jensen. The 1970's stuff is in color and features stars like Joanie Weston, Delores Tucker, Lydia Clay, Margie Lazlo, Jan Vallow and Carol "Peanuts" Meyer.
The rival Roller Games that was broadcast out of Los Angeles had battling babes such as Judy Arnold, Judy Sowinski, Lynn Cogelton, Gwen Miller and Veronica Sanchez, etc. etc. Personally, I never really cared for it.
To clarify a point earlier: The women skated in periods 1, 3, 5 and 7. Usually the climatic catfight occurred near the end of Period 7, however in the black-and-white days, when two women hit the deck together they immediately went at each other. The men skated the during even numbered periods.
One item on my list of "things to do" is to go to a current roller derby match this spring or summer. The country is teeming with roller derby teams (women only), and there are several local ones here in the East Bay. Obviously it's markedly different: the skating is done on a flat track and the women participate more as a hobby than as a profession. Still, I give them a lot of credit for what they do and they seem to have some pretty good scraps.
