Hit Like a Girl
« on: March 08, 2015, 12:42:57 AM »
"So I punch like a girl, but maybe I could kick your ass."
So says Lucia Rijker of the Netherlands, the best woman boxer ever, in my opinion. Her record is 17 - 0 defeats in boxing, 37wins and 0 defeats in kickboxing. She did lose one Muay  Thai match vs a guy, which was an exhibition match not counted in her career record (I did not separate out the boxing and kickboxing count in another post I put about this in the "let then fight" topic here). During her fight career she was known as "'the most dangerous woman in the world".  She has now started a Hollywood career, and was the cheating boxer in "Million Dollar Baby".

This is a Sports Science vid measuring whether she can hit as hard as a male MMA fighter of her size and weight. Content warning: this is about actual, real boxing, not foxy or 'bikini boxing'...fine if you like that- but it is not in the same zip code as boxing.
Here is the vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eplLem4jPs

What do you think? I have more thoughts than I should put here. There are more sides to the question than most would think.  I also posted this in the "let em fight" topic here, but wanted to bring more attention to it this way, cuz I find the way they did this test interesting but very debatable.

Bottom line for me, and I did spar with guys, women on average can not put as much power into a punch on a "pound-for-pound" basis as a guy. Muscle distribution and shoulder,  arm mass,  the typical greater height of  guys (gives a reach / punching range advantage), greater weight and even some differences in skeletal structure and bone density are the deciders (besides the individual's skill). That said, a trained woman can defeat trained men fighters. Those who think it is obvious that 'girls' hit weaker than guys, have never been hit by one who knew how to throw a punch, I'm guessing. Watch the vid and learn something, guys.

This isn't comparable per se, but when I met Veve Lane of Doom Maidens for a session/competitive catfight (my only competitive type session I've had up to now, not counting boxing sessions but even those were kinda light and more sparring compared to this), her body shots kicked my ass! My ribs/belly were so sore, it hurt to sit up for a good 2 weeks or better after, she also slapped me so hard it rattled my ear drum lol......so yeah girls can hit alright....and can kick the ass of a lot of men if they know what they're doing. I am proof lol.
yes, session women are, many of them, are very strong and skilled..they are pros really. sounds like you got yer $$ worth.
also-if anyone here really loves to box and knows how--I'd love to box them..in cyber unfortunately...but still...

That’s not a sports science video, it’s a stunt set up to entertain the viewers of a TV show, not an objective test.

First clue - look at the size of the gloves the guys are wearing, compared to the ones Lucia has on.

She's wearing 8oz competition gloves. Theirs are 18oz sparring gloves, with a lot more padding, specifically designed to absorb the power of a punch and reduce the chances of fighters being KO’d or injured while sparring. In boxing, they are known as "Pillow gloves"

I’ve done many rounds myself wearing both types of glove, including both competitive fights and sparring with the same guys, so I know what the difference feels like, as well as what it looks like!

Also, when the male fighter hits the test dummy, he throws a straight arm punch with no step up to gain momentum and power. Lucia takes 2 steps and moves to the side so she can twist her body and throw a power hook, not a straight arm cross. If she’d worn the same gloves, and thrown the same punch as the guy, I guarantee you, he would he would have hit the dummy harder than her.

Like I said, this was just for entertainment, and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Nothing to do with my ego. Check out the comments under the video. I'm not the only person who noticed the discrepancies I mentioned.

There is an old boxing saying " a good big'un will beat a good little'un"

Most guys ARE bigger so its very hard to have an objective test. More to the real world point training, strength and skill based, matters hugely so a well trained woman could out punch joe average of the same size. She will have been taught to drive from her feet so all her body is behind a punch not just her shoulder. That equalizes things.

Men do , normally, have more upper body size and strength but women do have an advantage in wrestling on leg moves of the scissors type. Women's pelvises are built to drop babies through so the hip sockets are wider apart. That means a wider base to the inner thigh muscles so much more leverage for equal muscle mass.

Next time you are in gym check out the settings on a adductor machine where you squeeze the knee pads in towards each other.Men wil be surprised how high many women set the weights on those for the  reason above.
