It's 1998, Bill Clinton is president, cell phones are the size of a brick and the internet is still dial up. The good news is that the biggest names in music this year have had enough, and a queen of music is to be determined. 28 are demanding to be part of this tournament, but there's only room for 16.

The ladies are listed in order of size, I have their stats here and they are mostly ordered by weight. With Faith Evans the largest, and everyone's favourite Aussie pixie Kylie Minogue the smallest. I'm being super generous and giving you all 4 votes each! Yes, that's how nice I am.

Feel free to post any images of the listed women in this thread, and don't forget to vote!

Hi guys, just a quick update and a big thanks to those who have voted so far. I know you can see the results already but for those of you who aren't logged in I thought I'd give you a quick run down of voting so far.

The top 16 as it stands is:
12 - Shania Twain
8 - Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue
6 - Madonna, Jewel Kilcher
5 - Natalie Imbruglia
4 - Faith Hill, Janet Jackson
3 - Melanie Brown (Spice Girls), Mya Harrison
2 - Sarah McLachlan, Melanie Chisholm (Spice Girls), Emma Bunton (Spice Girls), LeAnn Rimes, Lauryn Hill, Victoria Adams (Spice Girls)

Those not mentioned here have less than 2 votes. Once again thanks for your support!

Faith Hill was/is my fave singer from back in the 90's. Although probably too tall and slender to get past many of the ladies, I would be happy if she makes it into the tournament. Heres a pic and some stats.

From the website I checked she's actually listed at 120-122lbs, so you never know she might have a shot especially with her height. I think she's probably got enough votes [8] to make into the final 16 now along with Shania, Maria and Kylie. Things are looking good for Jewel too.

Hey everyone, just another quick update. Looks like the voting is starting to slow down quite a lot over the last 12 hours or so, so I think I might end the poll early. I'll see what it's like in another 12 hours once the forum members from North America have to chance to vote, but if there is no interest then I'll end it.

As it stands the final 16 are:

19 - Shania Twain
17 - Mariah Carey
13 - Kylie Minogue
11 - Faith Hill
7 - Jewel Kilcher
6 - Melanie Brown, Madonna, Natalie Imbruglia
5 - Janet Jackson, Emma Bunton
4 - Mya Harrison
3 - LeAnn Rimes, Victoria Adams

Then 3 of the following - Faith Evans, Sarah McLachlan, Melanie Chisholm, Lauryn Hill (all have 2 votes each).

Not sure if theres any way to include them at this point, but I think we left out two fairly big names in Beyonce who was with Destinys Child in the 90's and Gwen Stefani who was with No Doubt. Although technically not solo artists at the time they were certainly prominent names in that era. Not sure about Gwen but Beyonce being athletic and solidly built might have been a favorite to win the whole thing.

I guess its a little tricky with the whole weight thing because I doubt Faith weighed that much back then. I remember people always bashing her for being too thin.  ::)

Yeah, Beyonce was still 17 at the time. She was born in 1981. Stay tuned for the 1999 edition though! You are absolutely right about Gwen Stefani. I'll add her but I fear it's a little too late. All she needs is 3 votes though as it stands.

Yeah I get my info from a number of sites, sometimes each will have a different weight or even height for the same woman! The stats I have are basically best guess, but short of going back in time to 1998 and having Faith stand on some scales for us it's the best I can do.

For what my opinin is worth, likely not much, I'd rather see Stefani in than someone with only two votes (and maybe a 'tie breaker' should be "solo performer" over "group artist"?)???

Thanks for voting everyone, almost at 50 voters now which I'm delighted with and this has had way more interest than I'd imagined. That being said I think most who wanted to vote probably have now, so 4 hours from now I'm going to lock the poll. Voting for the matches will most likely only be 24 or 48 hour polls to avoid them getting old and boring.

As things stand everyone over 3 votes has made the cut. But that only makes 13. Faith Evans, Melanie Chisholm, Aaliyah & Victoria Adams are all tied on 3 votes and one of them is going to have to miss the cut. No idea how I'm going to decide who it will be.

Wishing my girl JLo could have made it but I guess 98 was just before her music career started. I think Mariah and Mel B might be the early favorites with skinny waifs Faith Hill and Victoria Adams making an early exit, but we shall see!

I guess 120lbs is still pretty thin for a woman almost 6ft tall. And as for Beyonce, I guess I did not realize she was that young back then but thanks for including Gwen.  ;)
