If I remember correctly, when Jerry Springer's show first aired, the "guests" were allowed to fight for a while before the bouncers pulled them apart.  Then some folks got up in arms about the violence on the show, and some wondered why the women (and men) were allowed to assault each other without being arrested.  So, from that point on, the bouncers immediately stepped in and stopped the fights just as they got started.  Also, if I remember correctly, some of the bouncers were actual city cops.

I could be wrong about the facts, but that's how I seem to remember it.  Too bad it wasn't more like the Jose Luis show where the women are allowed to fight it out.
