Women's bare knuckle fighting
« on: November 21, 2015, 11:07:07 PM »
Hey everyone;

I was doing some internet searches and I came across true stories of women's bare knuckle fights in England in the late 1700's.  A woman named Elizabeth Stokes was one such fighter, and she apparently is credited with the beginnings of women boxing.  I even read one posting where Ms. Stokes was entered into a hall of fame for her contributions to women's boxing.

I also noted there was a short movie/documentary done in 2011 entitled Lady Bare Knuckles, which chronicled her fighting career.  I was unable to find this movie on the net, but I may not be using the correct search parameters.

Anyway, I wonder if anyone has seen this movie, where I might find it, and whether it's any good.  There is a very short snippet on youtube, but it doesn't feature any fight.  There's also a short teaser on vimeo which looks fascinating.  Unfortunately, the teaser stops just as the two women put up their fists and approach one another.  Here's the link to the teaser:  https://vimeo.com/24054886

Can anyone provide more info on this film?

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies.

I had seen the FSCC piece, and I had also seen the chat with the female director.  But I hadn't seen the fight club history piece.  That was fascinating.

I'd still like to see the short film.  If I can locate it, I'll let everyone know.

I took a few courses in Uni that focused on gender in sport etc. My (female) prof even took up amateur boxing as part of her research. This film looks like it's right up the 'gender in sport' alley. But seeing as it was a student film, it was likely a school project. Maybe the project was simply to create a trailer...? but if it hasn't been published yet, I doubt it ever will - which is unfortunate.

In the interview with the female director, she indicated the film was a project for her film school.  The commentator even asked whether she received a good grade on the film.  And it was apparently shown at a Canadian film festival in 2011.

Fascinating subject!  I doubt we will ever see a return to that kind of contest.  We're much more civilized today....MMA, cagefighting, etc.

Seriously though, doesn't it seem like as a society we've taken a giant step backwards?  We went from gladiatorial fights to non-lethal boxing, and now we've thrown away the large padded boxing gloves for fingerless small gloves.  It's almost like we're just a stone's throw away from returning to the old bare knuckle contests.

On that subject, years ago, I saw an old video (maybe youtube before they started policing their videos) of two women in a sanctioned bare knuckle fight in a boxing ring.  I got the impression that it was a featured bout on a regular boxing card.  If I remember correctly, the ring mat was adorned with a beer sponsor logo.  Anyway, the announcer in his tux, introduced the two girls, the bell rang, and they went at each other.

The fight was very short.  One girl completely dominated the other from the start, so it was only a very short fight.  But the concept really intrigued me.

Do any of the "older" members of the group remember seeing anything like what I'm talking about?
