Tips for Yahoo Messenger Troubles!!
« on: December 07, 2015, 05:43:57 PM »
Hey everyone!!

I've been hearing from so many of my friends about all kinds of problems they have been having with Yahoo (especially on Mac) as far as last year since the Yosemite OS was released. And I've heard all kinds of tricks and people jumping hoops (including going out to purchase Netbooks and all kinds of devices to make Yahoo work again). This problem only got worse with the release of the new Mobile version for Messenger. So I thought I might give everyone my current solution and work-around, that might help some of you ^^

I am also a Mac User, but a friend of mine set my Mac in a way to have both Windows and Mac running at the same device. I honestly didn't know that was possible until he helped me with it, but the steps are as follows:

1) You need to have a MS Windows license - that is usually the tricky part, unless you are a student, in which case most universities will provide you with a free student license. A lot of others will have an old Windows 7 or 8 license laying around, and those *DO* work as well (more about that in step #2). If you don't have access to either of them, I guess you will just have to buy a Windows license, which costs around $120. That is completely up to everyone, but since I know people who went out and bought Windows laptops for hundreds of dollars just to run yahoo, I think this is a much cheaper option.

2) You need to go to MS website, and download the 'ISO' windows installation that matches the license you have... And then copy that ISO file to a USB flash drive.

3) On Mac, run the 'BootCamp' application. And just follow the steps!!

4) Profit!!

The outcome is that you will have your good old Mac, with the lovely MacOS, but with the option on boot-up to go to the Windows installation, and use the much more stable Yahoo Messenger for Windows instead of Trillian or all other dodgy methods people are using.

The added bonus is that the installations are completely and utterly separate. You can choose which OS to boot to from the options, and any files you have in the Windows will not be accessible by the Mac version, and vice-versa, which is a GREAT advantage if you have family members who use the same computer, and you are worried about privacy issues!!

And of course, if the new setup doesn't seem fun for you, you can literally undo it in 10 seconds through the BootCamp application!! So it's honestly worth the try.. For me, it works like a charm!!

Hope that would help some of you!! And if anyone has any questions, just toss me a message and I will help!!

Best tip...try and avoid YIM if you can...for sharing/sending pics it is next to useless...it's faster & more reliable to print them off & mail them!

*cough* yeah.... that works too...

Since Yosemite – my Yahoo’s been crashing right and left, showing I’m “available” when I’m just checking email

Explains yesterday ^^

But yeah, it sure works, and honestly, it's very neat and clean. Just make sure you steal a Windows key from the bank along with your loot. And if you need help setting things up, let me know ^^

Also make sure you have space for it. Using Bootcamp, you are going to end up partitioning your hard drive.

Yeah... duh... forgot to mention that, I just thought it's obvious, considering you're adding a whole new OS ^^

For me, I kinda divided my 500GB Mac into a 400GB for the MacOS, and 100GB for the Windows, which was way more than enough ^^

Ewa, the helpful...

..if called out on court, I will deny ever having wrote that here ;)

Well, thanks, I guess... Jerk :P

Make sure you are careful when using BootCamp as well.  You should really do a backup (if possible) of your Mac before doing this!

You could switch to pidgin messenger. With that you can chat with ppl on several different messengers like aim, yahoo, facebook ect at the sametime.
Have fun and tussle.

Never heard of that one!! I tried Trillian, and IM+ and few others, and they either sucked more than yahoo, crash all the time, or have less features. But if you say it's solid, I'll give it a shot ^^

the best bet is to download ubuntu as an os instead of windows. its linux therefore free.
pidgin for linux is much more functional than the windows version.
it has more and better features than messenger. The only bug i encounter is i have to be the last one entering a conference to see everybody.

True, but that in essence is not solving anything.... Windows (with all its faults) still provides the most stable, and complete version of yahoo.... And being unable to photo share or participate in conferences is a big hit to the overall experience...

If you think Windows or Mac OS is sometimes tough to navigate, don't use Linux. Sure there are a lot of distorts out there that are decent, but Linux is a pain. It is not meant for everyone and is nowhere newer close  to be used as a mainstream OS for the general population.

ubuntu is a simple and easy linux os to use.
the pidgin now comes with it and its more functional than messenger. you can send/receive photos on a file by file basis like here at fcf as opposed to photoshare. you can conference and best of all you can even try it out without downloading to see if you like it.
