Off Line yet still in chat?

Okay just wondering. I've seen it in chat were peoples names are listed, yet when I go to the profile of that person they are said to be offline, so how the heck does that work? Did they not log out properly or what? I mean I'd like to be able to talk to the people in chat, and not just have my messages be sent to no-one.

You can log into chat without logging into the site. Hence off line
